Title: Faith vs. Works: Knowing the Difference
Scripture: Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJV) – "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."
It’s tempting to mix grace with effort. We pray, give, serve, and resist temptation—these are good things. But when we believe these actions secure our place with God, we misunderstand grace. Paul reminds us that salvation is a gift, not a transaction.
Human pride naturally wants to contribute something, to “earn our keep.” But God intentionally designed salvation so that boasting would be impossible. No one will stand before God and say, “Look what I did!” Only, “Thank You for what You’ve done.”
Works are not worthless—but they are the result, not the root, of your salvation. When you work from grace, not for grace, your heart is aligned with Kingdom living. You give out of love, not obligation. You obey out of relationship, not religion.
This truth fosters humility. It also gives you permission to rest. You don’t have to perform for love—you are loved already. That is the power of faith-based living.
Application: Reflect on your recent spiritual activity. Ask yourself, “Am I doing this to earn something or out of gratitude?” Recalibrate your heart to respond to grace, not to earn it.
